Perched close to the river Neris, the Sporto 16 office building is a beacon of sustainable architecture in the city of Vilnius, Lithuania. Thanks to its highly insulated façade and futureproof technology, the modern business complex has earned the prestigious BREEAM Outstanding label - making it the most sustainable and energy-efficient building in the Baltics area. Reynaers Aluminium fabricator Almeca supplied the perfect windows, doors and curtain wall solutions for the job.
Modern architecture made simple
Sporto 16 is a modern office building designed by Remigijus Bimba from AKG Architects. It is home to the Financial Crimes Investigation Service (FNTT), an official institution of the Republic of Lithuania. The building's contemporary design is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, as user comfort is guaranteed in every detail. The light-grey louvres, mounted diagonally on top of the glazed façade, help to avoid interior overheating and glare, while providing the project’s iconic look. Moreover, the building's slanted decorative elements and trapezoidal floorplan add a sense of dynamism to this robust yet welcoming business complex.
You might notice that the new office building’s visual character resembles that of the nearby structures, situated on the same plot and separated by an open courtyard. That is no coincidence. Both Sporto 16 and the other two buildings – one of them is the headquarters of Sporto 16’s investor company, Evolis – all feature high-quality windows, doors and façades by Reynaers Aluminium.
The strength of high insulation systems
Located just a few minutes away from Vilnius’ downtown and financial district, the modern office building faces a busy roadway leading traffic in and out of the city. Evidently, thermal and acoustic insulation were of the highest importance during the design phase. For Sporto 16’s elegant 2,730 square-metre glazed façade, the building team chose ConceptWall 50 High Insulation (HI) curtain wall systems, combined with MasterLine 8-HI windows and doors. The result is a highly comfortable building envelope, with reduced acoustic levels down to 39dB and thermal insulation levels (Ucw) as low as 0.78 W/m²K.

Sustainability from every angle
Hard work pays off, also from a sustainability standpoint. Sporto 16 has been awarded an A++ energy label, as well as the coveted BREEAM Outstanding sustainable building label. The BREEAM classification system is a point-based system that not only looks at a project’s energy performance, but at different sustainable angles too. It also considers the materials used; the level of innovation and value creation; accessibility; biodiversity; and the building’s ability to contribute to its occupants’ health and wellbeing, with parameters such as thermal and acoustic performance, natural daylight access and indoor air quality. Sporto 16 scored exceptionally well on most of these requirements, leading to its Outstanding certification. When it comes to sustainability and energy efficiency, it is currently the highest performing building in all of the Baltic states.
