CasaNova

Rotterdam - The Netherlands - 2023

What does the future of the construction sector behold? The CasaNova project, a 115-metre high-rise residential tower with sloping façades in Rotterdam gives us a sneak peek. “There’s definitely a shift going on”, says Rob Grein, Project Manager at Reynaers Aluminium. "One thing is certain: sustainable building will remain a priority, and in the wake of Covid-19, effective ventilation is here to stay."

The building is distinguished by its sloping façades and a narrow, plinth-shaped base that supports this remarkable project. “Plenty of daylight, spaciousness and the view provide an unparalleled living experience”, as Rob explains. “Although, we faced the challenge of finding a solution for the operable sections in the storey-high façades that could provide safe ventilation in this high-rise building with floor-to-ceiling windows." Reynaers Aluminium participated from the early stages of the development, collaborating closely with Barcode Architects and Blitta Gevelystemen.

From POW window to WOW window

Reynaers Aluminium developed a special bespoke window system to enable maximum ventilation, even in the sloping façades. “You see, even the dimensions were different on each floor, so swing windows were not an option”, Rob continues. CasaNova required a fully customized system: parallel-opening windows, to allow maximum ventilation in the inclined façades. “For this project we used motorised POW windows, that open parallel to the outside”, Rob explains. “The vents and frames of the POW windows are connected by six parallel bars. The 18 windows have a distinct shape and meet high performance requirements.”

Measuring is knowing

For the other parts of the building, the following Reynaers Aluminium systems proved to be the best fit: ConceptSystem 86 for windows, ConceptPatio 155 for the sliding system, and ConceptWall 50 for the curtain wall systems. The Reynaers Aluminium applications are always thoroughly tested at the Reynaers Campus in Duffel. However, a 'start of production test' is increasingly used for quality assurance.

Rob clarifies: “Nowadays, we do more project tests on the building site, after assembly of the first element. The parties involved want to test and record the installation, including constructional connections. Even with the first designed element, you want to guarantee the quality of the product. A first measuring point lies in the possibility of a production test. Secondly, you can opt for a project test on the building site, which adds value to sustainability developments. This was absolutely important in the innovative solution provided for CasaNova, with the bold POW windows.”

Optimal conditions for residents

Ultimately, what matters most is ensuring that the (future) residents of the building can live under optimal conditions. The architecture and design prioritise these aspects and their search for the ideal partners, who could meet all sustainability and comfort standards, lead them to Reynaers Aluminium. The result? A project that fully lives up to our motto ‘Together for Better Sustainability’.
