Science 12
In the heart of Brussels stands Science 12, an office complex designed by architecture firm A2M. Located on the corner of Rue Belliard and Rue de la Science, this BREEAM Excellent building sets new standards in sustainability and innovative technology. The design focuses on functionality and comfort while making a positive contribution to the environment and city surroundings. Reynaers Aluminium worked closely with A2M to create a facade that is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally efficient.

Improved building performance
The façade elements of Science 12 appear identical at first glance, but subtly vary in slope depending on the floor level and orientation of the façade. This clever parametric design contributes to the energy efficiency and improves the building's performance.
Although the building is already nearly carbon-neutral with an energy consumption of only 7 kWh/m² per year, the parametric design provided additional optimisation, reducing the need for air conditioning and increasing the building's daylight autonomy by 5%.
Challenging tailored façade solution
For the Science 12 project, Reynaers Aluminium's technical project support team developed customised fixing brackets for the slats in the ConceptWall 50 elements. The double skin with aluminium slats required a flexible solution that allowed variable sloped angles per floor. The brackets were integrated directly into the curtain wall, enabling easy and efficient fixing of the vertical and horizontal slats.
By identifying potential bottlenecks as early as the design phase, the construction process was significantly accelerated. During execution, the Reynaers Aluminium fabricator and the main contractor worked closely together. This forward-thinking engineering approach ensured a smooth installation, without unnecessary delays on site.

More natural light, less energy usage
Thanks to Reynaers Aluminium's smart façade technology, Science 12 takes full advantage of natural daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The façade also serves as a sunshade, preventing overheating while allowing plenty of daylight to flow in. This approach lowers the building's electricity consumption too.
With a BREEAM Excellent certification, this project has a strong focus on sustainability. This prestigious certification recognises the building for its eco-friendly design and energy-efficient performance. Science 12 achieved this high score thanks to its use of recycled materials, innovative insulation techniques and energy-efficient systems that lower its carbon footprint. The BREEAM certificate assesses not only environmental impact, but also aspects such as health, wellbeing, water management and waste reduction. This sustainable approach makes Science 12 a leading example of futureproof construction in Brussels' European District.
Optimal energy efficiency thanks to MasterLine 8 windows and doors
Science 12 features sophisticated MasterLine 8 High Insulation + (HI+) windows and doors, which offer high thermal insulation levels and contribute to the office building's energy efficiency.

ConceptSystem 77 Fireproof EI60 doors
For maximum safety, Science 12 is equipped with several fireproof ConceptSystem 77 EI60 door systems. This solution provides extra protection through fire-retardant components, such as cooling materials and swelling bands, which slow down the spread of fire and smoke between different rooms or floors.
ConceptSystem 77 with EI60 certification guarantees a fire resistance of 60 minutes, with the door maintaining stability, thermal insulation (limiting heat transfer) and flame tightness. These fireproof doors are ideally suited to an office building where rapid yet safe evacuation in the event of an emergency is paramount.
Science 12, a sustainable success story
Science 12 is an example of how innovation, sustainability and technology come together in architecture. With an advanced façade solution that promotes both energy efficiency and aesthetics, Reynaers Aluminium contributes to this sustainable success story in the Belgian capital.
