REYNAERS ALUMINIUM INSTALL EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT FAÇADE FOR HIGH-RISE BUILDING IN ISTANBUL

Reynaers Aluminium and Turkish specialist contractor Fenis Sistem Aluminyum were selected to conceive, fabricate and install the aluminium and glass façade of the Kanyon project in Istanbul. With an enclosed construction area of over 250.000 m², Kanyon that will open to the public in Spring 2006 will be one of the largest home, office, shopping and entertainment centers in Europe. The 22.000 m² fenestration contract features Reynaers’ unitised curtain walling system CW 86, curtain wall and roof system CW 50 Structural Clamped and window systems CS 68 and CS 77. The aluminium systems used for the Kanyon project were tested to the most stringent international earthquake standards.

New eye-catching complex

Designed by award winning US architect firm The Jerde Partnership and Turkey’s leading architect Tabanlıoğlu Mimarlik, the Kanyon project is situated in the heart of Istanbul's financial district, Levent and will be opened in the Spring of 2006.

The complex comprises a multi-level basement car park (118.000m²), a retail centre (65.000m²) including shops and restaurants, an entertainment centre (8.000m²), exclusive residential units (32.000m²), and a 27-storey office tower (31.000m²).

Reynaers’ windows and curtain wall systems were chosen to achieve the architects’ vision of creating a unique multi-functional urban centre with curved building parts, terraces and a high-rise tower.

Severe performance tests

The criteria and tests as imposed for the Kanyon project were far more stringent than the governing national and international standards.

The aluminium façade systems were tested at the accredited facilities of the Taylor Woodrow Technology Centre according to CWCT and AAMA test methods and standards.

The Reynaers curtain walling systems all passed the most severe static and dynamic tests for air permeability, water leakage and resistance to wind loads.

Earthquake–resistant façade

Seismic tests were done on the mock-up to verify that the wall can take the expected building movement that will occur during an earthquake.

When an earthquake happens, the floors of the building move slightly sideways from the floors above and below. The curtain wall must be able to accommodate this movement. To test this, one floor (floors are simulated) of the mock-up is designed to be movable. This floor is shifted back and forth a specified distance. In this way the relative movement between floors that will occur during an earthquake is simulated.

The Kanyon project has been tested to standards that exceed the strongest expected earthquake to occur in Istanbul by 20%.

22.000m² aluminium parts

Reynaers will supply solutions for the different parts composing the Kanyon complex. Next to the unitised curtain walling system CW 86 used for the construction of the 150m high office block, several other Reynaers products will be installed.

For the residential bloc the curtain walling system CW 50 Structural Clamped was chosen; the windows and sliding elements will be fabricated with the CS 68 and CS 77 systems.
