Reynaers’ sustainable solutions

REYNAERS CHOSES TO WALK THE PATH OF SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

About 40% of the primary energy consumption is used in Buildings.  This is the key reason why, in the framework of the Kyoto protocol, European States aim to counter the greenhouse effect and decrease the energy use of buildings by 40% by 2020. In order to meet this goal, various measures were taken, one of which was the European Directive on the energy performance of buildings. These regulations primarily involve the energy performance of buildings, alternative energy sources, better use of climate regulation and lighting, bioclimatological concept, etc.
In this respect, Reynaers Aluminium has developed a complete set of solutions helping architects, fabricators and investors to improve energy efficiency of a building.  This includes highly insulated windows and doors, sliding doors, curtain walls, double skin façades, ventilated façades, brise soleil, and a complete BIPV offer.
In January 2010, it has pushed the boundaries even further in terms of insulation for Aluminium profiles, by proposing an aluminium window which can achieve an insulation value (Uw) < 0,85 W/m²K.

Insulation at its best

Reynaers solutions are fitted with a thermal break and have an insulation value that varies from normal to exceptionally high.
In two- or three-chamber systems the profiles are made up of two or three separate compartments, filled with air, referred to as chambers. Just like in hollow walls the air acts as an insulator in the chambers. In the space between the chambers we place fibreglass-reinforced polyamide strips (hard plastic). The longer these strips, the lower the U-value and the lower your energy bill.

Double façade

Fully glazed curtain wall façades have increased in popularity in the last 20 years. Modern office buildings can benefit from the aesthetically pleasing design and the transparency of a totally glazed façade. It can be quite a challenge however to find an optimal balance between thermal insulation and energy costs. Furthermore, the demand for natural ventilation in commercial buildings is driven by the growing environmental consciousness while at the same time energy consumption for buildings having to be reduced.
In this respect, double skin façades provide an ideal balance between maximal access to daylight and efficient energy control.
A ventilated double façade consists of a traditional single façade doubled inside or outside by a second essentially glazed façade. Each of these two façades is commonly called a skin, that is why double façades are often referred to as
‘ventilated double skin façades’.

Double skin façades provide many benefits:
- Thermal energy buffer that results in energy savings
- Comfortable indoor climate
- Wind protection
- Fire protection
- Solar preheating or ventilation air (a cavity can be ventilated with natural, mechanical or hybrid ventilation)
- Sound protection

- Incorporation of PV cells

In order to get the best results, an intelligent control system and a building energy management system are required.

Reynaers double skin façades can be used for new-build or renovation of existing façades and can be applied to all Reynaers curtain wall and window & door systems.

A major challenge in energy reduction is the control over direct sunlight that penetrates the glass. When sunrays fall on a window, a portion of them is reflected, a portion penetrates and a portion is absorbed by the glass. The latter portion of solar heat gain is converted into heat that subsequently radiates on both sides of the glass. When the glazing is protected by shading, the number of sunrays penetrating the glass decreases considerably whilst the reflected sunrays increase. This results in energy savings in airconditioning in summer and a reduction of the heating cost in winter, when the louvers can be placed in an open positing allowing natural heating from the sun.

For the choice and dimensions, the respective shadow angles can be calculated for each outer wall. The shadow angles are calculated on the basis of the position of the sun relative to the glass. Reynaers Aluminium developed BS Control, a software package for the simple calculation of these shadow a

ngles and the correct dimensions of the shading device for each outer wall separately. Once the required parameters are entered, the program immediately generates a 2D illustration.

Reynaers sun screening solutions are available as a standard system or bespoke solution. BS systems are available in various dimensions and types of fixed and moveable louvers that can be controlled manually or automatically.

Solar energy
Besides the above solutions, Reynaers now takes its commitment to the provision of sustainable building solutions to the next level by integrating photovoltaic (PV) panels into an extended range of its products.                                                                                                         These green energy solutions combine the best of both worlds: they meet all the modern architect’s standards in design and performance and actively generate clean energy at the same time.
The time is right, all the signs are there: systematic political support for green energy technology on local and international level, steady worldwide growth in clean energy production, rising demand for photovoltaics and falling technology production costs.
With this offering, Reynaers now provides one of the largest ranges of Solar products in the industry with the recent launch of the CW60 Solar, BS100 Solar, RB10 Solar and the SR 40.

Reynaers sets an example

Since actions speak louder than words, we have installed on our new warehouse at our headquarters one of the largest roof-mounted PV plants in Belgium: 5.000 m² of surface solar panels.
The results for 2008 are impressive:
■ Roof surface 16.000 m²
■ Energy production 571.100 kWh
(Comparative energy consumption by 166 households: 500.000 kWh)
■ CO² reduction 342,7 tons
(Comparative energy consumption of 190 households)
